The use of play in therapy with children is based on the understanding that children have not yet developed the cognitive and verbal abilities to express their internal experiences in the same way adults do. Through play, children learn about themselves and their environment, experiment with different roles, identify and rehearse problem-solving options, and readily communicate and express themselves. Play therapy is a structured, theoretically based approach that builds on children’s natural form of communication and expression, and provides a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment for a child’s experimentation and exploration.
Play therapy is especially useful for children 3-12 years of age, whose problems are related to life stressors including, but not limited to divorce, death of a loved one, difficult transitions in school or home life, serious illness, physical and sexual abuse, and domestic violence. It is also useful for children experiencing anxiety and depression, or having difficulty managing their emotions.
